G-Wiz Altimeter Tips

The photograph to the right shows the G-Wiz LC (left) and G-Wiz LC Deluxe (right). The G-Wiz LC is an accelerometer only unit, which is why it lacks the pressure sensor seen in the G-Wiz LC Deluxe (the upper section of the units in the photograph), and why it only has two output channels and hence, two output channel LEDs rather than 3 LEDs (the lower section of the units in the photograph).

The G-Wiz LC and G-Wiz LC Deluxe use standard PP3 9 volt batteries. In order to use the G-Wiz altimeters in smaller diameter rocket airframes, a similar voltage, but different sized, battery, or collection of batteries needs to be used, and the aluminium spacers should be unscrewed and removed. When a different power source is used, care should be taken to ensure that the voltage and current specifications of the new power source are similar to the normal PP3 9 volt battery power source, e.g. a 12 volt lighter battery can be used to power the G-Wiz for altitude logging instead of a 9 volt PP3, but if ejection charges need to be fired as well, even when two 12 volt lighter batteries are used, one wired into the G-Wiz for flight operations and one wired into the igniter circuit, this would still not be sufficient to fire an igniter.
